Urban beekeeping in New Mexico's largest city.
Plants of the Southwest in Santa Fe, and the Taos Economic Development Corporation will be hosting beginning beekeeping workshops for interested stewards this coming spring 2014 led by myself, Melanie Kirby and my partner Mark Spitzig, of Zia Queenbee Co.
These 5 week course intensives (1/week; total 20 hours instruction) will start in April and May. The curriculum will cover classroom theory as well as in-field practicums.
Students will witness the process from start to finish of "reproducing" hives (starter nuclei) and each student will get to take their starter nucleus home with them at the conclusion of the course and when the nucs are ready.
Starter nucs will be made from localized NM honeybee survivor stock and will follow the natural calendar for bees as it occurs here in northern NM. If you want to get regionally fortified stock that has adapted and acclimated to Land of Enchantment conditions, you have to learn to rear local.
Sign ups starting now. Course schedule and syllabus will be posted soon. Class size limited. If you are interested in these courses, send email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Thanks to the Bees- Melanie
