Albuquerque Beekeepers

Urban beekeeping in New Mexico's largest city.

I want to move my bees next door (about 20 feet). Question is can I move them during the winter all 20 feet or do I need to move 5 feet each time? Another question is can I move them 5 feet per day or is it per week? Thanks!

Hi Elaine.  I would say since it has been so cold and the bees not really flying at all, that you could move the hive all 20 feet.  When they "wake up"  they will take another orientation flight anyway.  Also, when they are flying you can move them 5 feet a day (or more) moving the hive, as the bees get adjusted to the new entrance location.  Hope this helps!

Hello Elaine, I'm with Megan. This seems a great time to move the hive. Good luck!

I am also with Megan.  You can move them the whole distance.  Something that I read this winter would help enusre success and that is if you place some grass or anything to change the look to the entrance the bees will do an oreintation flight.

Thank you everyone. Appreciate the advice.
