Albuquerque Beekeepers

Urban beekeeping in New Mexico's largest city.

Hi! I am getting started with two packages of bees this year! So excited!

I bought some beautiful hive boxes and would like to paint them. What are safe paints or stains to use on hive boxes? Also, any thoughts on colors that bees like? I seem to see mostly white painted hives, but are other colors ok? I am assuming that bees will not like red or black!

Thanks so much,

Birdie

Most people use exterior latex paint. Pretty much anything that is safe to use on a house is safe for the hive. You only paint the outside, the bees will propolize the inside. You can paint the hive any color but the bees will have to work harder to keep a dark colored hive cool. A black hive can get very hot in direct sunlight so lighter colors are recommended.

Thank you so much, this is extremely helpful!
