I just finished year 1 of the Beekeeper's Apprenticeship program. I am making my own TBH (2 hives and a NUC). I finished 100 top bars a coupe of weeks ago. I brought home my NUC yesterday to paint it. But tonight, while Mike, my husband was grilling dinner, a number of honey bees were swirling around my neighbor's trees. After dinner, the bees have calmed down and a swarm settled in one of the arborvitae trees. Randy Swartz was nice enuff to come out and help me get the swarm and gave me a top bar with honey and some brood for the NUC. Tonight, the bees are all settled in their new home. As Susan Clair said, if I build it, they will come! Randy calls it serendipity! I am officially a beekeeper! ;}
Randy - I'd very much enjoy talking w/ any of you on beekeeping. At your convenience - two-five-zero-two-871
There are several Top Bar Beekeepers in Placitas and up the road off Highway 550 in the Enchanted Hills area. We live near Bernalillo and we would be happy to talk to you.
Are there any beekeepers in Bernalillo town who use top bar hives. I would like to start bee keeping and am planning on using top bars. I would like to have a better idea of what I am getting into before I launch out. Many thanks!!
Paul, did these swarms occur up and around the ABQ area? I just started seeing capped drone cells in my hive last week.
Thank you all for your great tips, I appreciate it.
We used teak oil on ours and it is still in great shape going into it's third year. Husband also says that tung oil would work too.
I use exterior white latex paint on my hives. I put two coats on. It seems to hold up very well in the NM Sun and weather.
