Hi Dave,

thanks for attending the meeting the other night.  Lets see....I believe the rule of thumb for moving a hive and then returning it is six weeks.  Thats about the life span of a worker bee in the summer time.  If you waited that long, it would ensure an entirely new population that never knew they were in the original spot in the first place!  I think you could get away with a shorter amount of time though.

Im not sure about the plans for a smaller TJ style hive.  We call that a "nuc" for nucleus colony.  I use 5 frame boxes for trap outs but they are small.  It is a trade off for mountalbity which can some times be tricky.  I use cardboard flat sided boxes that I order from a bee supply store.  When I make nucs I usually make them at least 8-12 bar so the bees have room to expand.  Keep in mind that these can be VERY heavy with a successfull trap out....which is why I switched to using 5 frame easily mountable boxes.

I can ask TJ if he has a smaller design plan anywhere if you'd like.

Dave, we're growing spearmint, peppermint, rosemary, lavender, bee balm, verbena, penstemons, fernbush, tomatoes, thyme, cooking sage and russian sage, chives, basil,  thimbleberries, apple, cherry, and peach just to name a few.  Some of these have been in the ground several years and some of them we're just planting.  The rabbits are eating just about everything we put new into the ground because the drought has been so bad, so we're fencing off all the little new plants.  Yellow clover has been in bloom for a while now and the bees are harvesting them as well as the tamarisk (salt cedar) which has been blooming for the last couple of weeks.  I'm hoping to add some of the plants from your list.
