Inspections

Hello All, Finally living a dream by installing my first package of bees two weeks ago. I gave the gals 9 days to settle in before making an inspection. I limited the hive to 8 bars as a starter.  I expected comb to be on a few but was truly amazed to find fully drawn comb on several.  Before closing the hive I expanded the hive area to 12 bars.  (A little worried that is a lot of space to heat now that the weather in my location has dropped to the 20's at night.) The inspection raised some…See More

Need old brood?

This spring, I will be installing my first package of bees into my just-built top bar hive. One of the books I have been reading suggests using lemongrass essential old and an old brood comb in the new hive so it smells like a hive and not something new. Based on your experience, will scenting with lemongrass oil and old brood comb be necessary to reduce the chances of new bees absconding? JeannieSee More

"Hi Jeannie, I think it really depends on how comfortable you feel about the whole process.  I installed my first package on my own and it went fine.  The main thing is that you need to have a plan of what you’re going to do before…"

New Hive

Hello All, This will be my first spring to install a hive and bees. I have read several books and articles and watched videos on installing a package of bees, but I'm wondering if it would be wise to have a mentor for the first installation?  What are your thoughts? Easy as pie and follow the directions or have a mentor? JeannieSee More

Wasn't Olivia Carril GREAT?  I ran out and bought a copy of her book (so now I can return the library's copy!!)

If I see she's ever giving another local talk I'll be SURE to post it here!
