Hi There!
This year I got my very first hive of bees! I purchased a nuc of bees with a 2019 queen that looked very healthy and happy. Unfortunately, they really struggled to expand, and my 4 frame nuc has only expanded to become a 5 frame nuc... I'm afraid they won't last the winder with help. Anyone have extra frames of brood that would need a home?

Other info:

  • Location is North Valley
  • Hive is traditional Langstoth
  • I have been feeding bees with pollen patties and sugar
  • Queen is a 2019 (green dot)
  • Been checking on them on average every 10ish days

Any advice to get them though the winter, or anyone with extra bees that I could add to my hive?

Thank you all so much!

Em

Zia Queenbees  is gearing up for another phenomenal season! We've spent years learning our own NM microclimates, collaborating with local farms, farmers and pollinator enthusiasts, and also developing regional cooperation with like minded beekeepers. Mel is in the second lap of her graduate degree and will be supporting ZQB through breeding selection, grafting and assisting as needed. Mark is spearheading the 2019 bee and queen orders as his vision of extending ZQB through LongeviBees product availability. With spring collaboration from Wings of Nature Bees in the Bay Peninsula Preserve located in the Santa Cruz coastal mountains of Northern California, Mark, Mel and Aiden will be once again working to share ZQB-NM survivor lineage bees with beekeepers far and wide.

  • 3# packages (loose bees + 2019 mated ZQB-LongeviBees daughter queen) will be available in May. Cost: $200 (this covers over a decade of selection and the hands on care needed to share quality, well nourished, and healthy stock + delivery to northern NM for pick up).
  •  4-frame nucleus colonies which include a colony family and a mated 2019 ZQB-Longevibees daughter queen). Cost: $300 and includes diverse population of worker bees, plus clean comb and food stores.
  • ZQB-LongeviBee queen cells and virgin queens will be available starting in April. Cost: Cells are $10/each; Virgin queens are $20/each
  • ZQB-Enchanted Empress Breeder Queens will be available starting in late June-September. Cost: $225 (includes Express Shipping). These are open mountain-mated queens from our select survivor lines.

Note: Genetics of our bees are diverse as we follow a "Father Time tested--Mother Nature approved" regiment of testing different strains in varied climates and topography. Those that exhibit the heritable umbrella trait of longevity, after surviving through two winters, remaining productive, gentle and pest/disease resistant, are designated as breeder mothers. As they age even more, they become drone mother breeders and thus the heritable trait of longevity is present in both the matrilineal and patrilineal lines. Over the past 14 years, we have integrated genetics from the following lines:   VSH/SMR Italian, New World Carniolan, KWebster Russian x, Cordovan, Caucasian, and additional tested strains from like minded breeders who believe in Open Source sharing of quality bee stock from Pennsylvania, Oregon, NorCal, Michigan, and beyond!

To place an order: Please call Mark at 505.929.8080. He is a busy field guy so often times it is faster and easier to get a message to him and a response by texting him. The reception on the mountain is quite pitiful for voice conversations so he does return calls but when he is closer to the bigger towns and reception is clear. You can also email him at longevibees@gmail.com. Again, texting is the fastest form of communication for him.

And, you can always contact either of us at Email: ziaqueenbees@hotmail.com

IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO RAISE BEES! MUCH LOVE TO THOSE WHO SHARE SPACE, GROW POLLINATOR FRIENDLY CROPS AND FLORA, AND SUPPORT QUALITY FARMS, FARMERS, GARDENERS, CONSILIENCE RESEARCH, AND MINDFUL LAND STEWARDSHIP!

3/30/18 Hive Inspection

I placed a top bar hive in a friend's yard on Broadway a few weeks ago. At that time the hive was healthy with active Queen and several bars of brood. I've had reports of an active hive for those weeks. This morning I opened the hive at about 11Am and found 100+ dead bees at the back of the hive, low population of ~200 bees at Bars #5 & #6, no brood, 8+ combs of honey. No sign of a queen. I placed the dead bees in a jar for anyone who might be able to inspect them.

There was no queen among the dead bees and I didn't see anything that would indicate disease or mites to my untrained eyes. I returned about three weeks later to clean out the hive (wearing all black and no veil) and when I opened the furthest back bar a bunch of bees piled out. I put that bar back in place and opened bar #5 and found a bunch more bees. I decided not to inspect the hive then in my unprotected bear suit. Currently I'm waiting for our schedules to align so I can inspect the hive more closely.

Cut-outs

Hi,

I am listed on the swarm removal page as doing cut outs, and that is not the case.  I only do trap outs.  How do I get the page updated?

Thanks,

Dennis
